The O/S Outrigger, (front jacking point) |
This is another one of the
nightmare areas you are likely to find on an old camper! As you can see
there are a few patches which once removed show the whole story behind them.
And in my case I discovered that the outrigger was gone, and the area above
the outrigger was also in need of repair.
Also the end of the sill was in a bad way with all three pieces in need of repair. I had already purchased a genuine jacking point so that didn't worry me. But I was disappointed that the only inner and outer sill's I could get hold of were pattern parts |
|
I have gone one stage more in this picture, as explained I had already brought the new genuine outrigger so I completely cut of the old one. You can also see that the front of the sill is in a bad way, but because I couldn't get a genuine replacement I have chosen to just replace the rusted parts, so at the moment I have left it as it is so I can just sort out the outrigger first. | |
From the inside of the cabin I could see that there was a lot of damage so I cut out a large area to give me good access, (it didn't need to be this large but it helped) I still hadn't cut enough of the metal back as I could get enough decent metal to make a good weld on, I think that it is important in this area to make a good repair! |
I was happy in this picture
that I had now got decent metal, the outrigger is still welded to the
inner sill and I tried very hard to avoid interfering with the sill, until
I had the new outrigger in place.
the holes you can see in the outrigger are where I have drilled out the spot welds in the front panel. |
|
And here it is, I bent this
section up in my vice, it is fairly thick but not quite as thick as it
should be, but I wasn't worried about that as it is certainly better then
it was in the first place.
I produced a lap weld by folding up another piece of metal and putting it inside both sections, I turned the welder up to give a good weld. and whilst I was welding I had clamped the new jacking point into place to make sure it was welded into the correct place. |
|
The last job was to replace the sections of sill inside and out, and repair the B post which took a long time! |
